Briefing of the Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs, Aleksandre Darakhvelidze
The Ministry of Internal Affairs continues its uncompromising fight against the illegal circulation and distribution of drugs throughout the country.
Yesterday, law enforcement officers conducted another successful police operation in Tbilisi and the regions of the country. Over the past 24 hours, 34 individuals have been arrested on drug-related charges, including drug dealers, while some are accused of illegal purchase and storage of drugs in particularly large quantities. Among the detainees are both Georgian and foreign citizens.
Based on the Court decision, Law enforcement officers have repeatedly carried out undercover purchases of drugs from individuals arrested on charges of illegal drug sales and secretly recorded the mentioned process.
During the personal search and search activities held in detainee’s residential places, a particularly large amount of various types of narcotics was seized as evidence, including: "fentanyl", "heroin", "methadone", "subuxin", "marijuana" and others.
As a result of investigative actions, drugs illegally sold by detainees and cash allegedly received as a result of drug deals, as well as unregistered firearms and ammunition were also seized as evidence.
The investigation established that the individuals arrested for drug-related crimes used various methods for distribution, including the sale of narcotics from hand to hand and by “placing” method.
The committed crimes envision up to 20 years or life imprisonment.
I would like to emphasize once again that the uncompromising fight against drug-related crime remains the top priority of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Therefore, the police continue to intensively implement strict measures against this category of crime as defined by law.
Our agency will periodically provide the public with information on the results of the fight against drug crime.
