The Ministry of Internal Affairs held an event dedicated to the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, which was attended by the leadership of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, as well as representatives of various structural units, Prosecutor General, Giorgi Gvarakidze and the Head of the Investigation Service of the Ministry of Finance, Mikheil Maghlakelidze.
The Minister of Internal Affairs, Geka Geladze, made an opening speech at the event and reviewed effective ways to combat drug-related crime.
The Minister focused on the strict state policy towards the mentioned crime and noted that the uncompromising fight against drug-related crime remains one of the priority issues of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
Geka Geladze expressed gratitude towards the employees of the Ministry of Internal Affairs for their fruitful work.
As the Minister of Internal Affairs noted, the fight against drug addiction and drug-related crime is a global challenge in contemporary world, and Georgia is no exception in this regard.
“The distribution and use of narcotic pose a threat to state security, public health and the well-being of each citizen.
Therefore, the fight against drug-related crime is one of the most important priorities of our government. This is confirmed by the recent legislative amendments adopted by the Parliament of Georgia, which significantly tightened the punishment for drug trafficking. As a result, the activities of units fighting drug-related crime have become more effective in the process of preventing and foiling the mentioned crime.
In the direction of combating drug addiction, another package of legislative amendments initiated yesterday by the Prime Minister of Georgia, Irakli Kobakhidze is notable, which implies prohibition of the implementation of the substitution therapy by private entities and the import of psychotropic medications to Georgia by private companies, as well as strict control over the prescription of psychotropic medications. This initiative will play a very important role in the fight against drug addiction”- stated the Minister of Internal Affairs.
As Geka Geladze noted in his speech at the event, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, with its full capacity, continues to intensive fight against the illegal circulation and distribution of drugs in the country and takes strict measures defined by law against those accused of drug-related crimes.
At the event, the Director of the Central Criminal Police Department, Davit Kiknadze, presented a report and reviewed the statistics on drug-related crimes for the current year.
Davit Kiknadze drew attention to the special operations conducted by law enforcement officers in recent period and stated that the police will continue active measures in compliance of the law against drug-related crimes in the future.
