Ministry of Internal Affairs Statement

We would like to inform the public regarding the incident that occurred on Amagleba Street, Tbilisi.

Law enforcement officers stopped a moped driver on Amagleba Street for verification, in the course of which a driver of the passing car, G.K., born in 1993, approached the patrol police crew members and verbally assaulted them.

Law enforcement officers responded to the incident and, in accordance with the law, requested the vehicle driver to undergo a breathalyzer/drug test based on reasonable doubt, which was refused by the driver and became even more aggressive towards the police. Patrol police officers detained G.K. on the spot in accordance with Article 173 of the Code of Administrative Offenses, which refers to ignoring a rightful request of a law enforcement officer.

Herewith, during the arrest of the vehicle driver - G.K., a passenger of the same vehicle inflicted a physical injury in face area to the law enforcement officer.

One of the passer-by who witnessed the incident attempted to obstruct the law enforcement officers in the process of taking appropriate legal measures, at which point he briefly lost consciousness.

Video footage depicting the last episode of the incident is being circulated in social media, which does not reflect the full picture of the incident. Therefore, we call on interested parties to refrain from deliberately discrediting law enforcement officers.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs will take measures defined by law against all persons involved in the incident.
